What is KYC (Know Your Customer)?
KYC, or Know Your Customer, is the identity verification process platforms use to confirm a person is who they say they are, typically by checking a government ID and a live selfie.
KYC is standard across financial services and is increasingly common on creator platforms. It helps prevent fraud, confirms that creators are adults, and lets platforms meet anti-money-laundering and payment partner requirements.
A typical KYC check asks for a photo of a government-issued ID and a live selfie or short video to confirm the person matches the document. Some checks also screen names against sanctions lists. The process usually takes a few minutes, though manual reviews can take longer. Using a clear, in-date document and good lighting avoids most failed attempts.
On MyShrine, identity verification is carried out by Didit. Every fan and creator is age verified, and creators must complete identity verification before they can receive payouts. Payouts go to the creator's own wallet, which is why the verified identity matters.
Legitimate platforms use a specialist verification provider rather than asking you to email ID documents. Be cautious of anyone requesting ID outside an official verification flow, including people claiming to be platform staff in direct messages.
